C.BASNER  Stone Sculpture

Clyde Basner has carved stone since 2010. His work is rooted in the literature of Borges and in the conviction that stone is a site of revelation — where the dreams of the maker are excavated.

He arrived at sculpture through historic preservation. After completing a Master of Science at Pratt Institute, he spent several years in the field — as a masonry apprentice at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, and as a project manager and carving apprentice for some of New York City’s historic buildings: 718 Fifth Avenue, 256 Broadway, 20 Exchange Place, 63 and 67 Wall Street, One Fifth Avenue, and others. This work gave him an understanding of stone as structural reality — something that bears weight, endures centuries, and radiates immense power.

Since 2017, Basner has lived and worked in the Hudson Valley. His current focus is the Borges Series, drawing on stories such as “Funes the Memorious,” “The Library of Babel,” and “The Immortal.” He expects to continue indefinitely.

Alongside his studio practice, he is a senior project manager, overseeing a regional construction portfolio for a global client.

His work is informed by daily iaido practice — the Japanese martial art of the sword draw. He lives with the understanding that precision and patience are not constraints on creativity but its conditions.
